Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched the primary National Deworming Day at a
function in Hyderabad, 10th, Feb 2016. The Deworming Day was initial launched in 2015 in a few states and presently the programme will cover all the states within the country. Nadda expressed that India shall be in the forefront of the war against Neglected Tropical Diseases. Earlier the deworming action was implemented in 277 districts in 11 states and union territories across all Government and Government promoted schools and Anganwadi centres, targeting children aged between one and 19 years. 

What is the goal of National Deworming Day?

The main goal of National Deworming Day is to deworm all preschool and school age children between the ages of 1-19 years at schools and anganwadi centers so as to enhance their overall health, nutritional status, cognitive development and quality of life. 

India has the highest burden of soil transmitted helminths - parasitic worms within the world. Parasitic worms in children obstruct with nutrient uptake and might contribute to anemia, malnourishment and impaired mental and physical development. Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda minister for Health and Family welfare, Govt of India said The early years of a child are the most essential and significant. I am confident that if the comprehensive set of actions known in #NationalDewormingDay Guidelines is totally implemented, children will have improved health outcomes and be ready to achieve their potential to the fullest.

Mass, school based mostly deworming is safe, cost effective and can scale to millions of schools quickly. Deworming has been shown to reduce absence in schools, improve learning outcomes and increase the chance of upper wage jobs later in life. The Govt of India is launching a fixed one day school based program to confirm intensive deworming coverage and targeted stretch. Community mobilization efforts are undertaken to have interaction community based doctors and different local institutions.
